Michael Garafolo is quickly making a name for himself among the newest generation of Oregon winemakers. Future Foreign Lands is Michael’s exploration of what happens before, during and after grafting a vineyard, the inaugural bottling in a series which will denote the transition at Hillside Vineyard from Chardonnay to Fiano. The Chardonnay was planted in 1983 (old school 108 Davis clone), but in 2020 he pulled out a few lines and grafted them over to Fiano. As the vintages go by, the percentage of Chardonnay will lessen as the Fiano comes online and into full production. We will first taste the expression of Chardonnay, but over subsequent bottlings, the cultivars will be blended together in varying percentages as the vineyard transitions from 100% Chardonnay to 100% Fiano. The idea here is to honor the Chardonnay as the Fiano grows and fills out in the block, and to express the transition through the flavors, textures and aromatics of this place in a changing climate. Whole cluster pressed Chardonnay fermented and aged in older French oak barrels for 12 months plus an additional 6 months in tank. Bottled unfiltered and unfined. 125 cases produced.
