The Nog Abides

It’s that time again, friends: nog season...

The season when we stop pretending to be people with restraint and just lean fully into the creamy, boozy, holiday haze. We love the nog. Always have, always will.

Every year, we dust off our slightly stained, highly annotated nog recipe — the one a friend “liberated” from the back bar of an unnamed New Orleans institution — and declare it the best. (Because it is.) It’s rich but not heavy, sweet but not cloying, and strong enough to make you forget you just drank custard.

And while we’re clearly nog maximalists, we’re not alone. Some of Portland’s best bars (and, inexplicably, pizza joints) are flying the frothy flag this year. Pacific Standard, where Jeffrey Morganthaler still reigns as Portland’s Nog King. Pinky’s Pizza, the sleeper hit of the season. East Glisan Pizza, also slinging absurdly good nog. What’s with all the ’za joints having killer nog? We don’t know. We don’t care. We’re just drinking it.

So go forth and nog — in a bar, over pizza, or at home with our classic recipe (we’ve got it pinned on the site so you don’t have to dig). Wherever joy finds you, follow it. Life’s too short to skip the eggnog.

"Noah's" Eggnog

Rich, creamy, and pleasantly boozy, this eggnog recipe is the stuff of legends.
