Line cook-turned-bestselling cookbook author Molly Baz will be dropping in on Wellspent to pop bottles with Andy Young, aka Marigny Wines, to celebrate their VERY delicious, newly launched collab project Drink This Wine.
There’s gonna be food, there’s gonna be DJs, and there’s gonna be an ICE LUGE, so despite the fact that it’s only June, we’re calling it now: we’re throwing the Party of the Year on Saturday June 10th!
That’s right: cook, video host, recipe developer and best-selling author Molly Baz, beloved for her irreverent approach to food and cooking, is spending her only night in Portland at Wellspent Market. On a mission to remind us that cooking is, above all, FUN, Molly is known for her emphasis on good ingredients and simple preparations, and her new project Drink This Wine is an extension of that enthusiastic sense of hospitality. Andy Young meanwhile, left rock’n’roll drumming for cool-climate winemaking in 2012, and Oregon’s wine scene hasn’t been the same since. His focus on using sustainable and low-intervention techniques to craft “modern table wines without pretense” has helped shape the current landscape of our local “natural wine” movement. Now, through his partnership with Molly and their new label Drink This Wine, he’s finally realizing his vision of having quality natural wines “on everyone's table, in everyone's neighborhood, every day of the week.”
Built on the foundational idea that nights both “extra special” and "extremely insignificant” should be accompanied by good, low-intervention wine, Molly and Andy developed DTW specifically for drinking alongside meals. With that in mind, we’ve assembled a stacked team of some of Portland’s best chefs to create bites just for this event, women who’ve shaped our city’s food scene in ways big and small.
Alex Williams
For the past decade and a half, Alex Williams has been making her mark at some of Portland’s best restaurants, among them Nostrana, Beast, Tastebud, and Le Pigeon. For the past few years she’s been running the kitchen at Lovely's 50/50, where she gets to highlight stunning local produce on a nightly basis. When she’s not cooking, the South Carolina native (and dedicated jazz head… shout out to KMHD!) spends her time at the potter’s wheel, crafting earthy ceramics for friends, family, and local restaurants.
Luna Contreras
Originally from Mexico, Luna Contreras cut her teeth in San Francisco (where she racked up multiple 3 star reviews from the local press, a Michelin Bib Gourmand Award, and Top 100 Bay Area Restaurant honors for 5 years straight) before moving to Portland in 2015. She quickly established her bonafides in the Rose City with Chelo, her veg-foward take on regional Mexican cuisine, and has been the subject of countless media spotlights for both her food and her activism as a proud transgender woman of color. Luna continues to refine the Chelo concept as a member of the burgeoning Dame Collective, and has launched a (very delicious) line of condiments to further spread the flavors of
her homeland across the region.
Leila Schneider & Alexandra Burton
Originally from Alsace, in northeastern France, Leila Schneider’s love for food and gathering runs deep, and she strongly believes that cooking is a form of both care and community. After a decade spent farming in Oregon and Washington, where she met partner-in-crime Alexandra Burton (herself an on-again-off-again 20 year veteran of Portland’s food scene), Leila moved to Portland to bake bread at Cafe Olli. She recently launched the roving pop-up Tarte Flambée, where together with Alexandra she shares her passion for simple, seasonal, and carefully tended cuisine while highlighting the eponymous Alsatian dish.
We are absolutely thrilled to be hosting Molly, Andy and all of these talented chefs in the famous Wellspent Party Lot.
