Dubonnet Rouge

Produced by Pernod RicardFrance
An old-school French classic very much at home in the modern world, Dubonnet was first developed in 1846 at the behest of the French government in an effort to give Legionnaires stationed in India a palatable reason to drink quinine. Beloved the world over, it's said the Queen Mother even traveled with two bottles (along with a supply of gin) so that she'd always be prepared to make her favorite cocktail wherever she was (a habit she passed along to her daughter, Queen Elizabeth II). The version we get in America is in fact produced in Kentucky under license from Dubonnet's current owner, Pernod Ricard, and is faithfully made in accordance to the original recipe, quinine included. Rich and well spiced, Dubonnet is wonderful as a digestivo, and does well with gin, vodka, and sparkling wine.
