Wellspent Market is excited to be the only retailer offering seed packets from this new collaboration between Uprising Seeds (WA), the Culinary Breeding Network (OR), and northern Italian vegetable breeders, Smarties.bio. The project was born from a mutual love of radicchio and a desire to have more growing in North America. The seeds are certified organic, bred and grown in Italy by Smarties.bio.
Select a set (or two!) to plant in your own garden:
Fall Harvest - for the impatient radicchio grower. This set includes three types of seeds. In less than two months from transplanting seedlings into the ground, you can have a giant radicchio salad!
Radicchio Lover - for the bitter obsessed. This set includes six radicchio types for the person that can’t get enough radicchio.
The 'Other' Chicories - includes seeds for escarole, puntarelle, and catalogna.
Heirloom Brassicas -
includes seeds for cabbage, cauliflower and fiolaro broccoli.
Some seeding, transplanting and growing tips:
In northern latitudes, radicchio seed is best sown into garden trays, from mid-June through the first third of July. Transplant seedlings at about four weeks into light to moderately fertilized beds with 10-12” between plants. For more growing info, check out Radicchiology!
