Michael Garafolo is quickly making a name for himself among the newest generation of Oregon winemakers. Working mostly within the Columbia Valley AVA (which lies east of the Cascades, mostly covering central Washington but dipping down into Oregon near The Dalles), Michael’s wines are bright and balanced, with cheeky names and eye-catching labels. Heavy Water is Michael’s experimental skin-contact Riesling, an homage to the modern masters of orange wine from northeastern Italy’s Friulian region. The result is at once fruit-forward and juicy, with bright acidity and textural structure bringing it all into balance. One of our favorite summer wines.
